Wanna know why I got into the makeup industry? I originally wanted to direct films and used to be a production assistant on music video sets. I used to see these VERY average looking females come to set, and these would be the women to play the video vixens. Every time I’d place a bet in my head, that these women weren’t going to be able to look like video vixens after hair, makeup & styling. But EVERY TIME without fail, I was STUNNED & AMAZED at the transformation that would take place in the hair & makeup trailer. I became fascinated with what magic the makeup artists were doing and made a career switch.
It saddens me when I see young girls and even grown women, comparing themselves to women they see on magazine covers, print ads, TV, music videos and films. Heck even I do it, but I’m in on the secret that a lot of you might intellectually know, but rarely put that knowledge into consideration when comparing. It’s that, EVERYONE absolutely EVERYONE you see in front of a camera (still, video or film camera) is wearing makeup. In most cases…A LOT of makeup. Even if you swear it looks natural.
Before I studied makeup, I too thought I could properly access who’s beautiful or not. Who I should compare myself to and who I shouldn’t. I just thought all these women I admired on TV were naturally pretty. And wondered why I couldn’t look the same.
Now that my eye is trained to see makeup in a different light, I’m able see all the tricks the average eye can’t register. I laugh now when I see old music videos from the 90’s and I see how much makeup and lighting was involved to achieve the looks, but as a teen I thought these women were untouchable. I’m even blown away to this day at grown women who admire all the current movie stars, and think these women are wearing very little in their images. It almost brings me to laughter, but then I realize, I too was delusional before I studied makeup. So, I hold my judgment of women’s ignorance to just how much trickery goes into the images we have smeared in front of us daily.
Let me let you in on little secret. It’s all Smoke and Mirrors. And I know you’re all thinking, “I know that”, but really you don’t. With the right makeup hand, features can appear tighter, higher, smaller, bigger, lighter & darker. Imperfections are COMPLETELY concealed and asserts are highlighted. With the right lightening, features can get washed out all together and textures of skin can appear smooth, including acne bumps & deep lined wrinkles. High paid hair wizards add in fake hair to give length and fullness. Stylists paid to know exactly how to make you appear 10-15lbs slimmer with tricks of the trade in dressing you just right. And let’s not even get into what’s done in post with air brushing, even after the top hair, makeup, lighting and styling. And yet we STILL long to look like these images.
Let’s stop the MADNESS ladies!!!! This is insanity. I promise you, we’re all pretty much the same underneath all the smoke and mirrors. We have to learn to love what we have and use things like makeup and hairstyling to enhance what we already have and not try to become someone else. It’s unhealthy and it’s a betrayal to ourselves.
Let’s take a vow together (me included) every time we go to compare ourselves to another female, let’s try to remember she probably looks just like you underneath her magic and she’s probably secretly thinking she could look like you! Even if it’s hard…LOVE YOURSELF, until it becomes easy!!!
